NEWSTEO launches a new range of product for external sensor to power: the LGW

NEWSTEO, specialist of wireless measure, increases its wireless sensor range with new products dedicated to sensors which must be fed. Thanks to NEWSTEO technology, the sensor is directly fed by the battery of the logger while taking the measure, and thus does not need additional power supply source. The sensor’s heating time, with a programmable duration configurable from RF Monitor software, is integrated in these new products. Then, the measurements are either transmit by radio to the supervision centre (a computer or a PLC), or stored in the product internal memory for a later download

The main technical characteristics of these LGW family products are:

- The transmission operates on free ISM Band 868 MHz.
- The radio range is up to 800m.
- Output for the power supply of the sensor (several possibilities form 3 to 24 volts with 100mA)
- Several years of autonomy thanks to the supplied Lithium Thyonil battery.
- Waterproof strong IP65 case (made of aluminium)
- A single waterproof and strong M12 connector for the sensor connection (output for power supply and input for measures).
- Operating temperature: from -40°C to +85°C.

Thanks to this new range, NEWSTEO has already interfaced, for his customers, different kinds of sensors: pyranometers (measures the solar radiation), net radiometer, air velocity sensor with hot wire technology, analogical accelerometer, etc…

Newsteo adds a new radio diagnostic tool to its RF Monitor software

Newsteo continues developing its RF Monitor monitoring software to facilitate the installation of products on the field. From the Premium version of the software, the cheapest one, the following tools are now available:

Calibration Tool, for customers who wish to calibrate their product: multipoint calibration with linear or logarithmic regression for all types of sensor.

Range test Tool: this tool allows testing the radio range of remote products during the installation phase. Through preprogrammed radio exchanges between the product to install and the radio receiver key placed on the PC, the RF Monitor software gives a note indicating the quality of radio exchanges. The installer can then adjust the positioning of its product for the best possible transmission.

• And, recently, testing tool for radio band occupancy: the installer can now know the use of each channel of the 868 MHz radio band in Europe (915 MHz in the USA). Thus, if a nearby site occupies one of the authorized channels, the installer can before the deployment of products take this into account and move to another channel in the 8 available.

With all these convenient tools, Newsteo differs from other wireless solutions providers in the ease of installation of its products and assistance to installers.

Newsteo launches a new range of products designed to be connected to any type of sensor operating in harsh industrial environment.

Based on its experience in wireless measurement systems, Newsteo markets today a new range of products specifically designed for industrialists already having their measurement system and wishing to migrate quickly toward a wireless solution.

While “wireless” is now present everywhere in individual households, the industrialist did not yet have access to this new technology. With its new industrial wireless range, Newsteo provides the solution to this lack.

With its new range, named LGS, Newsteo offers different recorders / transmitters to convert any sensor into wireless sensor:

• LGS34: interfacing any 4-20 mA sensor
• LGS35: for 0-10 V sensor, with a version to interface -50mV to +50 mV sensors with an accuracy of ± 1.6 µV.
• LGS31: interfacing any potentiometrical sensor
• LGS39: logic interface (impulse sensor)

With this range of products, most sensors of the market can turn into wireless sensor: crackmetre, displacement, pressure, level, gas, rain gauge, flow meter, photoresistance, albedo meter, UV meter, potentiometer for angular measurement...

The installer simply plugs the sensor into the provided connector. Once the operation made, the Logger sends the measurements by radio to the supervision centre or store them in its embedded memory (Data Logger function). Installation and maintenance of the sensor are thus simplified.

The product has been optimized for use in difficult environment:

• IP65 aluminium enclosure (can be used outdoors) with its fixing system,
• Waterproof and robust M12 connector for connection to the sensor
• Half-wave antenna to increase the range,
• Large battery capacity (replaceable),
• Logger can be used from -40 ° C to + 85 ° C;

Newsteo adds a new feature to its Tracker: the calculation of the energy of shocks.

The Newsteo Tracker is a device that measures and records up to 6 months conditions of goods transportation . Equipped with multiple sensors, the sophisticated intelligent agent continuously monitors:

  1. Temperature
  2. Humidity
  3. Dew point
  4. Luminosity (allowing to know that a package has been opened)
  5. The height of a free fall
  6. 3 axis Shocks

During the trip, these time-stamped data are stored into the product’s memory. At the arrival of the good, they are downloaded by radio transmission to a PC and a PDF report is automatically created. In a few seconds, the recipient of the package knows if it has suffered from shocks, if the cold chain has been broken ... without even having to open the package.

After 2 years of growing sales, the Newsteo Tracker is already recognized as one of the most complete and less expensive product of the market of goods transportation monitoring. In recent weeks, it has been enriched with a new functionality, the calculation of the shock energy in Joules / Kg. When a shock is detected, the Newsteo Tracker measures the acceleration of the shock and its duration. From those 2 elements, it deduces the shock energy. This element adds crucial information, especially when the product undergoes a long shock but of low intensity. For example, a product that falls onto a stairs will rebound several times before stopping. The maximum peak acceleration (in g) could be relatively low, but the overall energy of the shock should be much greater and potentially more destructive. This energy will be measured by the Newsteo Tracker, contrary to the other products of the market.

The Newsteo Tracker is dedicated to the market of transport of fragile equipments (electronic devices, laboratory instruments, work of art...), pharmaceutical sensible equipment (vaccines, drugs, blood ...), food ... It also allows packing designers and users to test the performance and quality of their protection packaging.

The Newsteo Builder approved by the Lafarge Research and Development teams

For several months, Newsteo has performed long duration and “in-the-field” tests of the Newsteo Builder, a revolutionary device which analyzes internal conditions and behaviour of the concrete’s setting and curing.

The Newsteo Builder is a brand new measuring device that integrates several types of sensors. It is directly put in the concrete (foundations, walls, pillars…), in which it is completely integrated. Once covered by fresh concrete, it starts to store and time stamp the measurements of temperature, humidity and distortion, all recorded for several years. At user request, it transmits the stored measures through-out the concrete, by radiofrequency. No cables are needed, the user just needs to be positioned near the building with a reception PC equipped with the Newsteo RF-to-USB key and Newsteo RF Monitor software to receive data, store them in a database and then analysis them.
The Newsteo Builder is unique in the world and is protected by patent.

With this product, the building professionals can now precisely check stages of maturation and cure of the concrete that determine the strength and behaviour in use. Tested and validated in close collaboration with the Research Centre of Lafarge, this product has been incorporated this summer into the foundations of an experimental building of the world leader in building materials. After these very encouraging initial tests, Lafarge has launched a second test campaign by incorporating this time Newsteo Builders into the walls.

Newsteo is now looking for distributors to market the product in Europe and the rest of the world.

Nordic Semiconductor nRF9E5 transceivers underpin 868/915MHz wireless system supporting 500-plus coin cell powered tags at distances up to several kilometers

French wireless voice and data specialist Newsteo has developed a medium range 868/915 MHz ISM band active wireless platform with a reader-to-tag range from 10 m up to several kilometers, supporting 500+ tags communicating through up to 5 concrete walls, using proprietary RF transceivers from Nordic Semiconductor

Oslo , Norway - December 14, 2006 - Nordic Semiconductor ASA (OSE: NOD) today announced that French wireless voice and data specialist, Newsteo, has selected its nRF9E5 family of highly integrated 433/868/915MHz ISM band transceivers for use in its latest wireless product solution. The system comprises three parts: RF Tokens (using an nRF9E5 transceiver), RF-to-PC USB key transceiver (again equipped with an nRF9E5), and RF Monitor software used to configure, control and collate data collected by the Tokens.

Nordic's nRF9E5 is a true system-on-chip (SoC) comprising a fully integrated RF transceiver, 8051-compatible microcontroller (MCU) and a 4-input, 10-bit 80-kS/s (kSample per second) analogue-to-digital converter (ADC). The nRF9E5 operates in the popular European 433- and 868MHz ISM bands and the 915MHz band in North America, Australia and Israel. The device is an ultra-low-power, low-cost transceiver with a data rate of up to 50 kbit/s.

Newsteo's 12 gram RF Tokens can run for up to 5 years from a single CR2450 3-V lithium coin cell and come pre-certified eliminating the need for lengthy certification approval. The Tokens are supplied in a 44 by 30 by 10 mm cuboid form factor for discrete mounting on target equipment, walls or pipes. Each transceiver responds to a unique ID code to avoid communication clashes, and incorporates on-board security to prevent unauthorized access. Each RF Token can simultaneously host several different types sensor (for example, temperature, pressure, force, constraint, acceleration, flow, current and light), while an on-board Flash memory stores from 2,000 to 2 million measurements.

The RF-to-USB Key simultaneously controls and collects data from up to 500 Tokens at around 300 measurements per second over a range of 10 to 50 m for the standard antenna-on-PCB version (including transmission through two concrete walls). Range is boosted to 25 to 800 m with an enhanced 1D4-wave antenna (including transmission through five concrete walls), and up to several kilometers if used in conjunction with a Yagi antenna.

Newsteo's RF systems allow customers to switch cost effectively from hard-wired to wireless sensoring.
Applications include temperature and humidity sensoring in commercial greenhouses, cold chain logging and control and automation (for example of hotel room air conditioning systems), as well as intelligent sports applications (for example, logging runners in a marathon).

Newsteo selected the Nordic Semiconductor nRF9E5 for its wireless application for three reasons:

    " The RF system-on-chip includes an 8051-compatible on-board MCU plus all inductors and filters. This allowed the company to implement all control functions into a single, compact RF Token package without having to design-in an external MCU. The device also has an SPI interface to make it easier to connect to an external EEPROM memory;

" The nRF9E5's low current consumption means that in many applications each Newsteo Token will last for up to 5 years before either the batteries or the Token are replaced. This is a particularly advantage because the Tokens tend to be used in applications where frequent battery replacement cycles would add to maintenance cost and simplicity-of-use.

" Nordic Semiconductor's ShockBurst TM transmission technology optimizes power consumption to maximize battery life. ShockBurst allows the transceiver to spend most of its time in an ultra-low power consumption sleep mode before periodically waking to transmit for a short period before returning back to the sleep mode. ShockBurst includes features for CRC computation in both transmit (TX) and receive (RX) modes, and address decoding in RX mode, greatly reducing the load on - and cost of - the MCU running the RF protocol. ShockBurst is also capable of buffering a payload of up to 32 Byte coupled with short startup times ideal for low-power, low duty-cycle use.

"The main aim of this system is to make a wireless sensor network extremely simple to implement without requiring the customer to have specialist software programming knowledge," says Philippe Guenebaud, Newsteo's co-President.

"We selected Nordic's nRF9E5 because it features ultra low power consumption, and has good range - even through concrete walls, good bandwidth, includes an integrated 8051 MCU and only requires a couple of external components to get up and running. This made it possible for Newsteo to exploit all the performance properties of the chip while adding its electronic and software design skills to deliver a brand new turnkey solution to its customers."
